MIC Toi Rerehiko will be displaying an impressive array of works from a leading line up of contemporary digital art practitioners in Australasia as well as renowned Canadian artist David Rokeby. MIRROR STATES is an international group exhibition by guest curators Kathy Cleland and Lizzie Muller that offers a sophisticated and deeply seductive examination of the intimate and often uncanny interplay between interactive technologies and human subjectivity.
MIRROR STATES draws together art and technology, combining these two powerful systems of reflection and projection. The exhibition presents digital and interactive artworks that offer arresting glimpses of the self and intriguing interactions with digital others.The exhibition brings together some of the leading artists working in digital media in Australia and New Zealand and demonstrates the strength and diversity of contemporary digital art practice in Australasia. The exhibition will include Sean Kerr (New Zealand), George Khut (Australia), John Tonkin (Australia) and Mari Velonaki (with David Rye and Steve Scheding) (Australia). Joining the Australasian line-up is renowned Canadian artist David Rokeby, whose artworks and writing have been an inspiration for this exhibition, and an influence on many of the artists in the show. This is the first time that Rokeby's seminal work, Very Nervous System has been seen in New Zealand.
*In association with MIRROR STATES is a one day symposium Reflection and Projection. The Symposium coincides with the formation of CoLab, a new transdisciplinary research and development centre led by collaborative partners AUT University and MIC Toi Rerehiko. CoLab aims to become a national centre of excellence in the development and use of new technologies for creativity, communication and innovation. This symposium will engage with critical aspects of art and technology projects and will feature artists, researchers and curators involved in both CoLab and the Mirror States exhibition.
