Prize $3,000This celebration of two highly creative pursuits - fine wine and fine art - has proven to be an ideal one. As well as benefiting artists, the award encourages awareness of the calibre and diversity of arts in New Zealand.
The Goldwater Art Award 2003 winner will be selected from 25 finalists, drawn from over 130 entries, by this year's judge Judy Darragh - AUT lecturer and practicing artist with works in public galleries and private collections. Darragh will be looking for the best in contemporary art in a broad range of media including photography, painting, mixed media and collage. Known for her own mixed media sculptures made from Kitsch, Darragh's selection will challenge us to define for ourselves just what defines two dimensions in art.
Last year's award winner was Northcote painter Sharon Vickers, an AUT Bachelor of Visual Arts graduate. The winning oil on canvas titled, Behind a Head (21 hours of rear vision) was a take at the half-seen and barely noticed peripheral edges of our world. The judges of the Goldwater Art Award 2002 - painter and art teacher Simon McIntyre and art critic Keith Stewart - described the work as a 'nice combination' balanced by a 'rather interesting take on the theme of representation'. According to Vickers, the piece 'looks at the world around us and suggests a new way of seeing it. The outcome of that view of the world is that it is slightly topsy-turvy, with nothing in its logical place anymore'.
Nelson-based artist Patrick Malone won the Goldwater Art Award 2001 for his striking acrylic on canvas piece: Orb of Life and Light.
The winner of the Goldwater Art Award 2003 will be announced during the award ceremony at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery on Saturday 25 October at 5pm. The exhibition runs from 10 October through to November 12, 10am-4pm. Admission is free.
