Art Matters is a vibrant emerging art gallery, situated in Square Edge, Palmerston North. The gallery opened in November 2002, and 2003 promises to be a year with considerable increase in our profile as we put in place a number of exciting initiatives.Arts Matters primary aim is to educate the public about contemporary art - how to approach and understand it. We want to remove the mystic of modern art, and provide a friendly and accessible environment.

The internships have been established to enable emerging artists to gain the necessary business skills they will require in the market-place. This type of information can be difficult to obtain and decipher, so Art Matters offers a practical, hands-on learning environment. You will work closely with the Director in a mentor relationship.

The internship hours will be 10am-3pm, Thursday - Saturday, located sole-charge, on-site at the gallery in Palmerston North. There may be opportunities for the appointees to work on their own artwork during these hours.

Attributes Sought
We are looking for people who possess the following attributes: personable, self-motivate, pro-active, reliable, and honest. It is envisaged that the appointee will be a practising contemporary visual artist, however those interested in moving into arts administration or arts management are also welcome to apply.

Opportunities Offered
In return, Art Matters offers the following opportunities: knowledge of the day-to-day running of a gallery (including hanging, presentation, pricing, displace, website design etc), an understanding of how to build a market, participation in gallery events, increasing ability to discuss artwork and promote sales, the opportunity to meet other artists and build networks, and advice and guidance about your own art.
