Kingsland artist Peter Young took home the top prize with his entry Woven Cabinet in the 2007 OBJECTive Art Awards organised by Manukau City Council. Formerly known as the Manukau Vessel & Sculpture Exhibition and Award, this year's OBJECTive Art Awards attracted more than 70 works from artists and designers throughout New Zealand.

Image: A close-up of Peter Young's winning cabinet.Auckland-based jewellery designer Jasmine Watson, guest selector and judge, was amazed at Peter's technicality of design and the level of craftsmanship. Jasmine was looking for pieces that were innovative, paid attention to detail, and were unmistakeably hand-crafted.

Artists were asked to submit works of object art to this year's theme, a Maori whakatauki (proverb): "Ruia taitea Kohia kai Rangatira. Scatter the sapwood, keep only the heartwood."

Many of the other winning artists have a strong connection to Manukau, being either staff or students at MIT's Manukau School of Visual Arts.

Second place went to Ross Malcolm, a jewellery technician at MIT's School of Visual Arts (MSVA). Ross says his walks through Totara Park were the inspiration for his piece.

Kristy Wilson from Tuakau was third with her work Kahukura - a modern take on the Maori kakahu (cloak). Her cloak had layers of aluminium 'feathers' (made from recycled aluminium cans) in the place of traditional bird feathers.

Merit award winner Vivienne Hohaia from Papakura is a student at MSVA. Her winning work made innovative use of natural muka fibre from the flax plant. The other merit award went to Fran Allison from Grey Lynn. Fran is a painting tutor at MSVA.

All winning and selected works will be exhibited at the historic Nathan Homestead in Manurewa until 5 January 2008. All works are for sale.
