Acclaimed as the best NZ play of 1985 - a shocking New Zealand fable it gets better with time. Hilarious, bold and dark.
Upon a bare stage stumbles a grotesquely pregnant woman. Her make-up suggests Kabuki. As she opens her umbrella, rice falls to the ground - two angels act as midwives - they release the giant tummy zip - and so the freak falls to the floor.

Many of New Zealand's finest actors have performed in original 80's productions including: Geraldine Brophy, Mark Hadlow, Peter Elliott, Maggie Eyre, Alison Wall and Harry Sinclair.

Wild Cabbage follows the story of a New Zealand cabbage farming family. It is 1945. Hiroshima occurs. At that moment a child is born in New Zealand - she is a freak. She joins a family of unlikely characters including Zip-Up Tummy Mum, Devout Lout, Dad Past Glories and Barbie Doll Girl. Watch as Mr. G, and his two guardians attempt to reconcile the freak with its family and society.

A fiesta of theatrical disciplines including Kabuki, Restoration, Commedia dellArte and Vaudeville. In addition multimedia technology will be utilised to enhance the storytelling alongside an extreme theatrical environment, which will ensure the production is fresh and relevant to a contemporary audience.

Theatre Stampede is eager to bring this sleeping monster back to vigorous life. They are the innovative company behind such shows as The Young Baron, Blossom and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.

Wild Cabbage has a cast of 8 actors including:, Peta Rutter (Inland), Michael Keir-Morrissey (The God Boy), Jamie Bowen (Gary), Jeremy Randerson (The Young Baron), Yuri Kunigawa (Memory & Desire) and Warwick Broadhead (The Hunting of the Snark).

Wild Cabbage will be the theatrical sensation of 2004.
