Based on the sails of the ocean going Waka's that brought the first peoples to New Zealand the sail becomes a universal metaphor for the historical connections we have made with the sea. Today the Town Basin hosts yachts from all over the worls as it has down down through the years, the harbour also providing one of the economic basis for the community.
The sails stand 10 metres high and are contructed of steel masts, wood and copper weave, and stainless.
Can be seen on state highway one just before the city of Whangarei.
