Influenced by both the prevailing cultural climate and by the response her previously exhibited photographs have generated, Ans has selected images from her proofsheets which she now believes should be seen. The camera reveals a corner of material reality that the eye doesn't see at all or can't normally isolate (Robert Adams). However, picture-taking is first of all the focusing of a temperament [being there], only secondarily of a machine (Susan Sontag) and, to take a picture is to be in complicity with whatever makes the subject interesting, worth photographing, including another person's pain or misfortune - (Rhondda Bosworth). Photographs bear witness to a human choice being exercised in a given situation (John Berger).
This choice extends to editing decisions, and proof sheets allow for careful consideration and on-going review of images.
