Wellington writer Linda Niccol has won the British Short Screenplay Competition for 2006, beating 2,000 rivals to scoop the top prize.

Her script for the short film The Handkerchief was shortlisted by the New Zealand Film Commission, which described it as a "touching, well-crafted script".The screenplay was a joy to write, said Niccol, and the award was especially thrilling because of the A-list judging panel, which included Kenneth Branagh and Michael Kuhn. As part of the prize, The Handkerchief will be made into a 15-minute film next year, with a budget of up to US$300,000 (NZ$435,000).
Niccol's brother Andrew is a successful screenwriter whose credits include The Truman Show and Lords of War.
