Creative New Zealand received more than 180 high-calibre applications for the sought-after exhibition attendant roles at the New Zealand Pavilion for the 2013 Venice Biennale.

Creative New Zealand received more than 180 high-calibre applications for the sought-after exhibition attendant roles at the New Zealand Pavilion for the 2013 Venice Biennale.

Ten attendants – including curators and practising artists – have been selected to support and promote the exhibition Front Door Out Back by renown New Zealand sculptor, photographer and installation artist, Bill Culbert.

"We were impressed by the quality of these applications and short-listing candidates was a difficult process,’’ says Creative New Zealand’s Chief Executive, Stephen Wainwright. “With backgrounds ranging from fine arts degrees to gallery management, we have a strong team of ambassadors for Bill Culbert’s work – and for New Zealand art on the world stage.’’

The 10 exhibition attendants are: Amber Baldock (Wellington), Sean Duxfield (Christchurch), Lauren Gutsell (Dunedin), Anne Harlow (London), Marlaina Key (Auckland), Angela Lyon (Dunedin), Gina Matchitt (Rome), Pippa Milne (Melbourne), Julia Waite (Auckland) and Hutch Wilco (Wellington). 

The attendant positions are unpaid, but Creative New Zealand provides their airfares, travel insurance and accommodation. They will work for four to six weeks each, from late May to November. As well as assisting with the supervision and promotion of the exhibition, they will blog about their experiences.

The 2013 Venice Biennale opens on 1 June.

Background:

The Venice Biennale is the largest international art exhibition in the world. It features exhibitions by more than 80 countries and attracts more than 30,000 key international curators, critics, collectors and artists to the three-day Vernissage (preview) period alone. In 2011, 440,000 visitors attended the six-month exhibition.

New Zealand sculptor, photographer and installation artist Bill Culbert is New Zealand’s official representative at the 2013 Biennale. His work will be shown at the New Zealand Pavilion, the Istituto Santa Maria della Pieta (La Pieta), on the busy pedestrian thoroughfare between Piazza San Marco and the Giardini (the main venue of the Biennale).

Culbert’s career spans 50 years and more than 100 solo shows in New Zealand and internationally. He creates elegant, poetic and often dazzling sculptural installations using lights and found materials.
