Young visual artists promote peace and social justice

The second stage of renewal of the anti-nuclear Mural on Karangahape Road's reservoir wall made great progress in June when 10 young artists met with original VAANA (Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms) artists, Miriam Cameron and John Nicol, at Disrupt Gallery to show their rough sketches for the next six panels. The design teams represent organisations from the greater Auckland region and the Pacific.

Young visual artists promote peace and social justice

The second stage of renewal of the anti-nuclear Mural on Karangahape Road's reservoir wall made great progress in June when 10 young artists met with original VAANA (Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms) artists, Miriam Cameron and John Nicol, at Disrupt Gallery to show their rough sketches for the next six panels. The design teams represent organisations from the greater Auckland region and the Pacific.

Image: Andy Leleisi'uao - artist.The six new works are being created by Kate Millington and Miriam Cameron (VAANA 1985), the Auckland Girls' Grammar School Maori unit, students from Media Design School, Disruptiv artists and Samoan artist Andy Leleisi'uao. The artists compared notes as their designs were displayed beside each other to begin the complex process of ensuring an aesthetic flow when the panels are linked together. Most artists are producing two or more works for selection.

Miriam Cameron and VAANA selector John Nicol outlined the aims and motivations of the original VAANA group. Each member of the design teams added their thoughts on peace and social justice. "I was impressed by the deep thought and high level of skill demonstrated by the younger artists" commented Nora West, K Road Arts Manager who is managing the project.

The finished works will be in an exhibition opening at Disrupt Gallery on Thursday August 31 at 6pm. Six of these works will be selected by Nicol, Auckland City Senior Arts Planner Warren Pringle and Nora West. Then digital designer Michelle Ardern will assemble them, with a biography panel, for Sharp Signs to replicate on vinyl and hang alongside the first eight.
