To celebrate Matariki in June, Chamber Music New Zealand presents Tuhonohono performing works by renowned New Zealand composer Gillian Karawe Whitehead.

"Tuhonohono" means to bring together, to weave, so the ensemble, which is comprised of both Pakeha and Maori musicians, "weaves together the strands of Maori and European musical traditions".To celebrate Matariki in June, Chamber Music New Zealand presents Tuhonohono performing works by renowned New Zealand composer Gillian Karawe Whitehead.

"Tuhonohono" means to bring together, to weave, so the ensemble, which is comprised of both Pakeha and Maori musicians, "weaves together the strands of Maori and European musical traditions".Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades star cluster or The Seven Sisters, and what is referred to as the traditional Maori New Year. The Maori New Year is marked by the rise of Matariki and the sighting of the next new moon, which this year occurs on 16 June.

An important part of the Matariki is the celebration of customs, beliefs and arts.

Tuhonohono is comprised of Richard Nunns (taonga puoro), Ingrid Culliford, (flute) Ashley Brown, (cello) Ben Hoadley, (bassoon) and Emma Sayers (piano.) Singer Ramonda Te Maiharoa-Taleni joins the group for these two concerts.

Tuhonohono appear as part of Encompass, a new initiative by CMNZ to present quality music from around the globe.
