The Adventures of Tintin has won the Best Animated Feature Film award at the Golden Globes.

The Sir Peter Jackson produced film won against animated features Rango, Puss In Boots and Cars 2.

In accepting the Golden Globe award, director Steven Spielberg thanked Jackson, to applause from the audience.

Based on Herge's comic book characters the film, the first in a proposed trilogy, is about the adventures of a curious young reporter Tintin (Jamie Bell) and his loyal dog Snowy. Designs and digital work were created in Wellington by Weta Workshop and Weta Digital.

Weta creative director Sir Richard Taylor said they were 'delighted to see Steven Spielberg on stage accepting a Golden Globe Award for The Adventures of Tintin.'

"It’s a project very dear to our hearts and it’s a real tribute to all the artists at Weta Digital who helped put this film together for Steven and Peter."

Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Christopher Finlayson, on behalf of the Government, today congratulated Sir Peter Jackson.

“The award for ‘Tintin’ as best animated feature is another well-deserved milestone in Sir Peter’s already illustrious career,” Mr Finlayson said. “The film’s state of the art animation produced another wonderful and distinctive fantasy world, and also served as a reminder of the immense contribution he continues to make to the art of motion pictures.

“Sir Peter has given back a great deal to the arts in this country. He authored a review of the New Zealand Film Commission that is a basis for ongoing policy work, and in November bought the BATS Theatre building and granted the theatre company a long-term lease. His successes have been good for New Zealand.”

Peter Jackson is directing the Tintin sequel, with filming expected to start in the next 12 months.

The 69th Golden Globe Awards were held in Beverly Hills on Sunday January 15 (Jan 16 NZ time).
