This has not been an easy year for Wellington's theatre critics.

First, in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, Roger Rees's Vladimir and Sir Ian McKellen's Estragon, played as out-of-work vaudevillians, passed the time by abusing each other, thus:

Basement Theatre, Auckland - THE XMAS MONOLOGUES 2: The horrific humour of Christmas madness

I'm sure we can all relate to the anxiety, overwork and stretched budgets that usually seem to surround this supposedly happy time of year. You thought you had it bad? These Monologues take the misery of Christmas to the next level. Gruesome at times, painful, a bit like funniest home videos but even sicker and much funnier.

I have a fantasy that MUNE an autobiography will be read by all Creative New Zealand and NZ Film Commission board members, CEOs and key staff members over their Christmas break, not just because it raises some key questions about the institutions they work for, but because it will reconnect them with "the clear, passionate voice of the New Zealand artist."
