The finalists in The New Zealand Jewellery Design Awards have been announced but they will have to wait until the Gala Preview to hear if they have won the top prize.
The presentation will be made at The New Zealand Jewellery Show which returns to Wellington from 9 - 11 September at the Michael Fowler Centre as part of the nationwide REAL New Zealand Festival.
Eight finalists, four for fine jewellery and four for contemporary jewellery have been announced.
The Show, supported by the REAL New Zealand Festival Lottery Fund, will also co-inside with the final week of World of Wearable Art™. It showcases the best of New Zealand jewellery design and brings our leading jewellers from across the country to Wellington to present and sell their work.
From Dunedin to Whangarei, from contemporary work to fine jewellery design, from forty dollars to a hundred thousand, from the finest diamonds to edgy student creations – the range and diversity of work has created a unique experience, offering the best of the country in one exhibition.
New Zealand design is the hallmark of the Show. The Show, now in its 6th year, will feature the work of all entrants and finalists in The New Zealand Jewellery Design Awards. The competition began in 2007, and has steadily grown, attracting a record number of entries this year.
“Wellington is the natural home of this arts and design event” Show Director Grant Stevenson says, “and this year, as part of REAL New Zealand Festival we can give the international visitors a high quality experience and a wonderful chance to take home something uniquely New Zealand which is both extremely personal and very special.”
Announcing the New Zealand Jewellery Design Awards finalists 2011
In alphabetical order the contemporary jewellery finalists are:
Jane Dodd (Dunedin) for A Bit of a Bear a necklace made from ebony, oxidised sterling silver and shell.
Matthew McIntyre Wilson (Taranaki iwi) (Wellington) for Poi Kura 2011, a feather Poi necklace made with Karoro (Larus Dominicus) feathers, fine silver, a NZ threepenny coin, sterling silver, copper, cotton
Kvetoslava Flora Sekanova (Auckland) for Literality, a neckpiece using non precious stone, silk thread, paint, mixed media
Sarah Walker-Holt (Papakura) for Timekeeping a neckpiece made from wooden kitchen utensils, firewood, found silver plated metal, vintage thread, garden twine, copper, nuts and bolts
The fine jewellery finalists are:
Julian Bartrom (Auckland) for Le Dragonfly en Tremble a brooch hand made in 18ct gold and set with blue topaz, tourmaline, peridot, sapphires and 93 brilliant-cut diamonds.
Lucas Ebbeke (Auckland): for Primavera a flower ring that transforms from a ring to a pendant made with platinum, 18ct pink gold, white and yellow diamonds, and Ceylonese sapphires
Nick Hensman (Wellington) for 1886 a pendant made with white and rose gold, sterling silver, titanium, a trilliant cut Ceylon sapphire, 5 round pink sapphires, and 4 brilliant cut diamonds.
Dan Palmer (Wellington) for Naked Barcelona a ring inspired by the abstract art and variety of Spain is made of a mix of platinum and gold set with a pear shaped diamond.
