Arguably one of the best plays of the 20th century, The Lesson is Ionesco's most popular and staged play, and is still running today in Paris, after more than 12,000 performances since 1957.The Lesson is a cocktail of violence-psychological and physical-and comedy that ranges from the screwball to inky black.

The Lesson has hardly been staged in New Zealand and to all accounts it has never been staged in Auckland.

With the exception of the great Stuart Devenie, who plays the lead role as the professor, the project has an all Romanian cast & crew. Cristina Ionda, who has recently made her New Zealand stage debut in Kevin J Wilson's 'Red Shorts' at The Edge Theatre plays the pupil. Mihaela David, who has on her resumes blockbuster Hollywwod productions such as 'Cold Mountain' and 'Dracula' is the costume designer. George Tudor, at his third New Zealand production after Ahol Fugard's 'Hello and Goodbye' and 'Red Shorts' signs the direction and set design. Ella Kosma, a marketing professional turned theatre enthusiast, is the producer.

With its avant-garde European spin this compelling 'dark comedy' has the power to frighten and delight as only absurdist plays can.
