The best show was in Venice, and I wasn't. My consolation was the realisation that Auckland has finally matured - there's now so much art being shown here that it's impossible to see it all. In my youth I went to nearly every art opening in town; to do so now would contravene the laws of physics. There's some degree of anxiety attached to this shift. In larger countries, people find a particular niche, but we haven't had the population to support specialisation, so typically art openings have been fly-papers for all kinds of specimens.
