The Sundance Film Festival was launched in 1978 in Utah as an offbeat independent film showcase 'centred round a nucleus of earnest film-maker discussions and dusty retrospectives'.
It has helped discover talents like Soderbergh, Tarantino and Kevin Smith and has showcased New Zealand films.
Thirty years on Elizabeth Day from The Observer says the festival still supports undiscovered and under-funded talent but explores the impact of 'the big dollars and celebrity jamboree'.
