The South Project (2004-2008) is a five-year program of exhibitions, forums, performances, residencies and publications designed to explore the possibilities of south-south dialogue. Final Call for Proposals due 22 December 2003

South 1 - The Gathering
1-4 July 2004, Sidney Myer Asia Centre at University of Melbourne

The South Project (2004-2008) is a five-year program of exhibitions, forums, performances, residencies and publications designed to explore the possibilities of south-south dialogue.It draws together new cultural energies coming from Africa, the Pacific and South America.

South 1 is an initial gathering of artists and community representatives from countries of the southern hemisphere. It will be an opportunity to share experiences, build networks and map future directions. The four-day
event will focus on the past, present and future:

1. Living Memories
Time to consider the past struggles that have characterised the histories of participating cultures. This day invites reflection on where people have come from and the trials of recent history.

2. Present Concerns
A survey of current activities and current trends that involve south-south dialogue. This will include art/craft projects and mapping diasporas.

3. Future Challenges
An opportunity to work on what might be achieved through south-south dialogue. This includes consideration of the creative, environmental, political possibilities that such conversation might enable.

Questions to be considered include:

* What is the south?
* On what basis can traditional and modern worlds co-exist?
* How can artists create links between countries of the south?
* What mutual benefits are there in south-south collaboration?

The South Project is seeking proposals for participation in South 1. Participation may take the form of workshops, lectures, performances and panel discussions.
