Image: Moana Maniapoto and the Tribe With a Total Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) of 14%, New Zealand ranks as one of the world's most entrepreneurial countries.14% of the New Zealand population are entrepreneurially active. There are 281,000 opportunity entrepreneurs and 55,000 necessity entrepreneurs in the country. Opportunity entrepreneurs spot a smart market need and fill it. Necessity entrepreneurs are "forced" to start a business due to job loss or redundancy. New Zealand has the highest proportion of so called 'opportunity entrepreneurs' in the OECD and developed countries and ranks significantly higher than the USA.

Maori are every bit as entrepreneurial as European New Zealanders. If they were ranked on their own, Maori in New Zealand would be the world's seventh most entrepreneurial country.

Maori entrepreneurship is particularly strong in the land-based industries but is becoming increasingly important in tourism, forestry, fisheries and related businesses in the service sector.

A Maori research team led by Ella Henry and financed by Ministry of Maori Development interviewed Maori entrepreneurs from Kawakawa to Invercargill.

Maori entrepreneurs are younger, have less education, and have higher levels of unemployment than non-Maori entrepreneurs.

Compared to other Maori, Maori entrepreneurs have significantly higher levels of education and employment.

Manukau City, Waitakere City, North Shore City and Taranaki Province all have higher entrepreneurship rates than the United States
of America.

Manukau City's entrepreneurs have the highest rate of new products and services, make the most use of new technology, and have the greatest export focus, yet they have the least education.

North Shore City has the highest percentage of entrepreneurs identifying themselves as unemployed, a low rate of new products and services, the most perceived competition,
a low uptake of new technology, and the
lowest export focus.

Taranaki Province is by far the most optimistic region in New Zealand and may have the distinction within GEM of having the world's highest percentage of opportunity entrepreneurs. 93% of Taranaki's entrepreneurs are opportunity entrepreneurs.

Waitakere City and Manukau City exceed the New Zealand national entrepreneurship rate. Waitakere City has the highest percentage of entrepreneurs with a tertiary level of education.

37.7% of New Zealand's entrepreneurs are female (or about 5% of the female adult population). New Zealand woman are world's leaders in having the necessary skills and motivation to start a new business. In New Zealand, starting a new business is a socially acceptable career option for women. New Zealand is also world-ranked in encouraging women to become self-employed or start a
new business. Young New Zealand women
aged 18-24 are more entrepreneurial than young men. Women have a higher fear of failure than did men.

Although it holds a high rank in the Entrepreneurial League Table, New Zealand - like most of the rest of the world - experienced a drop in Total Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) in 2002. Globally, the TEA dropped from 9.77% to 7.98%.
