E: Scape, Sculpture in the Landscape 2009 at The Sculpture Park at the Waitakaruru Arboretum begins with a group of works asking questions about our treatment of each other and our planet.

Curated by Sarah Anderson, the exhibition has developed as a series of interlinked ‘clusters’.

Lucy Bucknall’s Backpack, Fletcher Vaughan’s Ship of Fools and Donna Sarten’s Esperanza all reflect on the ‘underbelly’ of human behaviour, our capacity to harm both our environment and ourselves. Jeff Thomson’s Topiary Kiwi and Trish Clarke’s Captive Breeding remind us of all that is good and precious.

Some work is site specific and a direct response to its chosen area like Gaye Jurisich’s magnificent Rapunzel and Linda Pringle’s They weren’t all straight, other pieces resonate as a result of their placement within the park and proximity to other work. The interaction that occurs when works are placed together such as Ian Boyle’s Aspiring, Ralph Price’s Cone and Gaye Jurisich’s Taut creates an energy that links them all together in a palpable and unexpected way. Anah Dunsheath’s Inside out challenges our perception of space and where the landscape ends and the sculpture begins.

Containing a wide range of materials and types of practice E: Scape offers the viewer a chance to see a cross section of contemporary NZ sculpture at its best.

There are three works from the Wallace Arts Trust, providing an opportunity for these significant NZ works to be viewed by the public and marking the beginning of further collaboration between the Wallace Arts Trust and the Waikato Sculpture Trust.

Don’t miss the performance by the Polyphonics on Easter Saturday (April 11th) at 2.00pm in the Park, presenting a work in three movements and three locations in the sculpture park. They will be devising several new instruments and sonic performances for your aural palette.

“Polyphonics” explore the resonant qualities inherent in the contemporary building and packaging material polystyrene with remarkable results.
