Auckland artist Sam Morrison, who was recently featured in Auckland City's 2007 Living Room series, opens his first solo show on 12 July at Fresh Gallery Otara in Manukau. Auckland artist Sam Morrison, who was recently featured in Auckland City's 2007 Living Room series, opens his first solo show on 12 July at Fresh Gallery Otara in Manukau.The Living Room project featured Sam's installation of the Whisper-ma-Phone, which saw enclosed sound devices attached to a number of lamp posts around Auckland's CBD. The Whisper-ma-Phone is an interactive sound installation triggered by human movement.

In his new exhibition aw-tom-uh-tuh, Morrison will present a similar collection of mechanical sound-generating devices, also known as noise machines. This will be a unique site-specific work, specially constructed to fit the gallery space.

"The purpose of the mechanical devices is to highlight the material relationships taking place within the gallery, through the sounds that they make," says Morrison.

"The mechanisms will be self-operational but at times their rhythmic operation will be triggered by external events."

Morrison is quickly being recognised as an exciting and fresh Auckland talent. He recently graduated from the AUT School of Art & Design and has exhibited previously at Auckland Art Gallery and at Artspace on K' Road.

In early 2007 he performed at the Auckland Festival AK07 with Phil Dadson's The S3D Performances, which featured sound sculpture and performance.
