The current McCahon House resident and Wallace Art Award winner Richard Lewer has opened his studio up for a week, until Sunday November 23.

The work has been transcribed straight onto the walls of the purpose built studio and is a direct, almost stream of consciousness response to the environment, the community and the weather.The current McCahon House resident and Wallace Art Award winner Richard Lewer has opened his studio up for a week, until Sunday November 23.

The work has been transcribed straight onto the walls of the purpose built studio and is a direct, almost stream of consciousness response to the environment, the community and the weather."People get to see the struggle in the studio, the accidents and the freshness" says Lewer.

"Work displayed in galleries is so polished, considered and filtered. The studio is the engine room. You've got lots of things bubbling away."

This is a unique opportunity to see a McCahon House artist-in-residence at work in the purpose built, Pete Bossley designed artist's studio in Titirangi, high in the bush above French Bay.

His studio at 67 Otitori Bay Road, French Bay, Titirangi will be open between 10am and 4pm from Sunday 16th to Sunday 23rd of November. Visitors may also walk through the little restored bach next door where late painter Colin McCahon and his family lived in the 1950s.

Richard Lewer won the top prize at the 2008 Wallace Art Awards for his painting on a billiard table cloth Skill, Discipline, Training.

The Wallace Trust Paramount Award, valued at more than $38,000, goes toward a six-month residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Programme in New York. Lewer also received a bronze trophy by Terry Stringer.

Richard earned a Master of Visual Arts from Victoria College of the Arts, University of Melbourne in 2000, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland in 1992.
