Image:Qteam Chelsie & Tess explore pests and insects with Dr Shaun Forgie. Eww!Dr Shaun Forgie, entomologist, tells Chelsie and Tess all about the sex life of insects and how they attract each other with 'pheromones' or smells. Charming!
Some pests that have been introduced into the New Zealand ecosystem have had a huge impact on New Zealand flora and fauna - sometimes good and sometimes devastating to the environment. It is the job of entomologists (scientists who study insects), that any species that is introduced will not reproduce out of control affecting especially our native species.
Shaun shows Tess and Chelsie giant bugs and miniscule pests under a microscope. He travels throughout the world studying bugs and has an amazing collection of multicoloured insects beneath the glass - some made into jewellery by women in Africa and others make a protein rich snack for those sojourns in the jungle!
