A city-wide celebration of the visual arts
City Gallery Wellington is proud to present Telecom Prospect 2004: New Art New Zealand in partnership with the Adam Art Gallery, the New Zealand Film Archive and Massey University.

Following on from the success of the inaugural contemporary arts survey exhibition Prospect 2001, Prospect 2004brings the freshest, most innovative artwork currently being produced in New Zealand to a wide public audience.

Telecom Prospect 2004 offers a 'snapshot' of the visual arts in this country and will continue to build strong audiences for cutting edge contemporary art practice in New Zealand. Curated by Emma Bugden - one of New Zealand's leading young curators with a background in experimental and artist run projects - Prospect 2004 takes a look at the artists who have made, or are likely to make, an impact on the thinking and identity of our time.

"Telecom Prospect 2004: New Art New Zealand takes the stage with works which are open ended and socially, intellectually, and emotionally charged," Emma says. "The works in the show are engaged with the world - they're less concerned with abstract ideas and far more concerned with the people, places, activities and objects which surround them."

Telecom Prospect 2004 will make you think and feel and entertain you. Emma describes the exhibition as "a personal snapshot of where New Zealand art is at now."

"This is my take on the most exciting, surprising and inspiring work made in the last two years," she says.

"Researching the show and travelling around the country visiting artists in their homes and studios has been a real privilege. I think people are going to be as energized as I am by what they are going to see."

Spanning four venues, showcasing over 40 artists - from well known senior figures to exciting emerging talents - and including painting, photography, sculpture, installation and moving image works, this is a truly national exhibition on a scale not seen before in Wellington.

City Gallery Wellington Director, Paula Savage says, "Telecom Prospect 2004 will activate Wellington with a city-wide celebration of the visual arts."

"Building on the strengths of the first Telecom Prospect, this year we have expanded beyond the boundaries of the City Gallery to work in partnership with the Adam Art Gallery, the New Zealand Film Archive and Massey University, creating a Wellington-wide contemporary arts event."

"This has given us the opportunity to include more artists, to show large-scale adventurous works which will dazzle and intrigue. This large-scale contemporary art biennale will put Wellington on the arts map nationally and internationally," she says.
