Auckland band Hot Grits are a late addition to the festival line-up for the fourth annual Parihaka International Peace Festival on January 9-11 in Taranaki. The high energy 12-piece mixes funk, soul and Afro-beats and is sure to be a crowd pleaser. The Hot Grits play the Te Atamira Nui Mainstage on Sunday evening.
Acclaimed choirmaster Stephen Taberner will rehearse a Parihaka Festival Choir over the weekend, with a public performance scheduled for Sunday afternoon. The choir will be culled from interested festival-goers, who will rehearse and perform freedom songs from South Africa, Latin America, Afro-America and Aoteoroa. With over 15 years' experience, Stephen has travelled the world with various choirs and facilitated dozens of choral workshops across the Tasman. Based in Melbourne, the NZ-born jazz musician has arranged choirs of up to 700 voices. Based in Melbourne, the NZ-born jazz musician has arranged choirs of up to 700 voices.Wellington band Olmecha Supreme will host a youth performance workshop at the festival, comprising beat boxing, emceeing, electronic production and urban dance. The workshop takes place on the second day of the festival (Saturday) and the young participants will present an actual performance for festival-goers on the following day. Olmecha Supreme themselves will perform on Friday night.
The two million litre reservoir on the festival site, completed in time for the first festival in 2006, has had a total upgrade following a $205,000 grant from the Ministry Of Health. The work of volunteers and generous rates by contractors and suppliers has ensured that the project has been cost efficient. Five tonnes of steel was used on the reservoir and over 300 tonnes of concrete was poured.
Tickets for the festival are available at www.parihaka.com and Ticketek (service fees apply). Adults are $155 (gate sales $175); children (under 16, accompanied by adult) $10; kaumatua (over 65) $20. There are additional charges for camping ($20 per adult) and parking ($20 per vehicle).
