Papakura Theatre Company's second production of the year is the chilling stage adaption of Ken Kesey's classic novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.   

Adapted for the stage by Dale Wasserman, the play first premiered on Broadway with Kirk Douglas in the leading role of Randle P McMurphy - a role made famous by Jack Nicholson in the 1975 film version. 

The film gained nine Academy Award nominations and romped away with Oscars in the five major categories.

McMurphy is a man with several assault convictions to his name and he decides to have himself declared insane to avoid more jail time.  He is transferred to a State Mental Institution where he finds himself ensnared in a viciious power game with Nurse Rached, who rules the ard with an iron hand.  McMurphy gambles at cards and in fact anything, defying Nurse Rached's ban. 

After a first fight with the ward orderlies, he undergoes electro-shock therapy but even this fails to curb his rebellion.  But the game is up the night McMurphy sneaks his girlfriend and her mate into the hospital to join in a wild drunken party! 

On stage from Sat 18 July to Sat 1 August at 8 pm, with matinee on Sunday 19 July at 4 pm.
