New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Principal Trombonist David Bremner recently travelled to Bremen in Northern Germany to acquire a set of four Thein trombones, made by the Thein Brass Brothers, an internationally renowned family of brass instrument makers with a century old tradition of musical instrument making.

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Principal Trombonist David Bremner recently travelled to Bremen in Northern Germany to acquire a set of four Thein trombones, made by the Thein Brass Brothers, an internationally renowned family of brass instrument makers with a century old tradition of musical instrument making.

Auckland audiences will be the first in New Zealand to hear the NZSO’s new trombones being played at next week’s Zukerman Experience concerts at the Town Hall. The purchase of these prestigious instruments was funded by the 2008 NZSO Foundation Annual Appeal.

The new German trombones have a very distinct, mellow and versatile sound, so the NZSO trombone section now has a selection of instruments to use for its wide-ranging repertoire, and the ability to add to the NZSO’s unique sound.

NZSO Principal Trombonist David Bremner said: “I spent the day with Heinrich and Max Thein in Bremen, trying out numerous trombones with different bells, valves, and slides. It was a long day of tooting, but very rewarding, and the ones I picked out are absolutely fantastic. These instruments are a real asset for the NZSO.”

The Thein Brass Brothers make brass instruments for all the great orchestras of the world, including the Chicago Symphony, New York and Vienna Philharmonic and The Royal Opera House in London, amongst many others.
