We are proud to continue support for a wide range of radio content for the 2013/14 financial year. Nearly 30 different radio stations across the country are helped by these investments to serve very different audiences.

NZ On Air is committed to ensuring diverse voices, viewpoints and music can be heard on all kinds of radio. Stations, individual programmes, streaming and podcasting are supported so that radio audiences can hear a wider range of local content on air and online.

More than $2.5 million has been provided for 14 different community access radio stations broadcasting from Auckland to Invercargill. These stations provide direct access to the airwaves for many different kinds of communities less well served by the mainstream. Not only do the stations provide an important local voice for communities, their shared streaming services allow people outside the region to belong.

Nine student and alternative radio stations around the country together received more than $1million to help introduce new New Zealand music and provide more opportunities for New Zealand musicians to find fans.

"These alt radio station programmes are an important part of our New Zealand music work," says NZ On Air Chief Executive Jane Wrightson.  "They are like incubators, championing difference and diversity in New Zealand music and providing an outlet and an audience for new music not heard on mainstream radio."

Special interest programmes funded include the award-winning Paakiwaha, for broadcast on Radio Waatea, and programmes for the Christian Broadcasting Association, which air on Newstalk ZB.

Major public funding is invested in Pacific stations Niu FM and 531pi as well as New Zealand's most popular radio station, public broadcaster Radio New Zealand National, and its sister station Radio New Zealand Concert.

"It's great to be able to support such a large range of radio content" says Jane Wrightson.  "From local to national, from music-focused to special interest programming and quality current affairs - there's something for everyone."
