Long running London based promoters of New Zealand music, Spacific are proud to present a month long series of mostly free events in the capital showcasing both established and up and coming talent from New Zealand.
Their series kicks off with a free show at London institution Flat White's new cafe, The Milk Bar, on Thursday 1st May with Adi Dick (LOOP) playing live.The following week on Tuesday 6th May, three London based acts are playing a free show at The Big Chill Festival's bar, The Big Chill House in Kings Cross: Leigh Franklin, Precious Clark and Jayson Norris. While Leigh channels Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones, and Precious oozes South Pacific soul, Jayson is a unique phenomenon - a Kiwi act who has a huge UK following but was, until recently, relatively unknown at home. His laidback surfer style is reminiscent of Jack Johnson, and his live show is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.
Opshop make a welcome return to London after a sold out show in November 2007. They are playing 2 nights at Islington's Bar Academy on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th May, both of which are nearly sold out. They are also playing in Edinburgh, Dublin and Amsterdam.
On Tuesday 20th May, former Eight frontman, Bruce Conlon showcases his debut solo album "Audience of One", with support from gothic country rockers The Thin Men (formely El Hula), again at The Big Chill House, and also free.
To soothe the pains of a long Bank Holiday weekend, we are throwing a BBQ at Shoreditch's Cargo on Monday 26th May, with Christchurch's The O'Lovelys and Ragamuffin Children playing inside, while The Bassbin Kid entertains revellers in the garden with his wheelie bin soundsystem.
Finally Nelson's finest breakbeat banditos, Minuit, launch their Northern Hemispheric debut release at Clockwork on Thursday 29th May. Given the crazy amount of airplay they have been getting on Radio One, KISS and Xfm, plus the great press, it is shaping up to be a huge year for them.
To help pay for much of the above, the New Zealand Music Commission has licensed Spacific the rights to their infamous NZ Music Month T-shirt and they have printed a limited edition London version. The Tee will be available at all the gigs, at Flat White cafe, and in a total coup, at Rough Trade's Brick Lane flagship store, where there will also be a month long focus on NZ Music, courtesy of expat employee Margot Didsbury.
