The Graduate Diploma of Game Development has been introduced by Auckland's Media Design School and is New Zealand's only specialised computer gaming qualification.Video and computer games have become big business around the world with the US retail market reported to be worth over US$9 billion in 2001 - and steadily increasing.

The 18 month course has been designed in collaboration with commercial game companies who have shaped the curriculum to match the skills required by the industry.

Media Design School's course has two streams - one specialising in programming and the other in game art and design. This division replicates the gaming industry where clearly defined creative and technical teams work along side each other.

Positions are still available in the art/design stream of the course and students enrolling in this stream will come from backgrounds in graphics, art and multimedia.
On the course they will learn 3D character modeling, rendering and animation as well as the creative and production processes involved in game design.

The course is split into three stages including a group-based game development project in the final part of the course. The gaming course is an NZQA accredited qualification (Level 7). New Zealand students are eligible for Government funding and can access student loans and allowances.
