Reverie, an exhibition of these latest offerings, is on at Gow Langsford Gallery from 19 September - 13 October.Paterson pours glitter, black enamel and varnish onto a foundation of paper, DiBond aluminium or canvas, and allows the liquids to merge and pool. Nothing is pre-conceived, the artist is merely the conductor in this opus.

In other works, Paterson ritualistically launches party poppers directly at wet enamel slathered on board and pinned to the wall. Remnants of the capsules' contents cling to the surface in a web of confetti string, paillettes and ribbons of aluminium foil. Paterson revels in having no control over the application and surrendering to the inevitable explosion. The act is captured and the idea of spontaneity is achieved.

In allowing himself to be liberated from an instinctive desire for complete control, Paterson has succeeded in producing an enigmatic collection - and in doing so he has discovered his own artistic reverie.
