A new gallery has opened in Nelson City to showcase artworks that promote recycling/reuse of materials.

The Refinery Gallery at 3 Halifax St has a core group of resident artists, some of whom laboured free of charge for several months last year to achieve an opening in September.With a distinctive frontage opening onto a main road, the gallery has already drawn in a stream of visitors and sales are ticking over. Future expansion into garden art is likely to be achieved with the co-operation of the neighbouring Environment Centre.
Despite a shoestring budget, artists such as Eme Kilkenny, Tipene Ryan-Smith, Duncan Leask, Murray Sparrow and Tejas Arn were able to bring this project to a successful resolution, providing a niche in Nelson for artworks that occupy a decidedly fringe niche in Nelson.
