Christchurch Art Gallery is to celebrate the life and work of Sir Miles Warren, one of New Zealand's most acclaimed and honoured architects.

Miles: a life in architecture will reveal Sir Miles's contribution to modernist architecture as well as his success as a watercolourist and gardener.The exhibition traverses the career of Sir Miles, from his formative years and the design of the Dorset Street flats, to such landmark buildings as College House, the Christchurch Town Hall, the New Zealand Chancery in Washington DC and the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Christchurch. As well as architectural work, it includes watercolour illustrations of his building proposals and of architecture he admired while travelling
Opening at the same time as the Ellerslie International Flower Show, Miles: a life in architecture will also reveal Sir Miles as an extraordinary garden designer, featuring the elaborate formal garden at his Governors Bay home, Ohinetahi, created with his sister Pauline Trengrove and brother-in-law John Trengrove.
"We are very pleased to be able to celebrate the life and work of one of our own in this exhibition," says Gallery Director Jenny Harper. "Sir Miles's work creates an important legacy for the city. It is also especially significant that this exhibition will be open at the time Sir Miles celebrates his 80th birthday.
"We are expecting that this exhibition will be enormously popular - as well as of national significance."
The exhibition will contain photographs, drawings, architectural models and a CAD 'walkthrough' of the New Zealand Chancery building in Washington DC.
Sir Miles holds a CBE and KBE for services for architecture, and in 1995 was admitted to the Order of New Zealand.
Miles: A Life in Architecture will be at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu from 7 March 2009 to 14 June 2009.
