**Films featured at SploreMiC is moving to K'Rd on March 4th 2004. (above the Post Office, next to Artpspace and The Film Archive). Although we will not be having a gallery space for the year, the office and editing suite will still be open and available. We are hoping to keep the same phone numbers and address for postage, but will keep you informed. The Moving Image Centre will continue to produce the Homegrown NZ short films in the NZ Film Festival and Shortfuse at the Classic every second month. At the end of the year we will be moving down to the CPO in Britomart, but more on that later.

The last exhibition in the gallery this year is Electric Cafe:

If you journey to the crossroads that connect the respective avenues of electronic music, unconventional cooking and new media arts, you will find an odd diner known as the Electric Cafe. Playfully exploring relationships between the sonic and culinary arts, Electric Cafe is an exhibition featuring the artists George Chang, Andrew Clifford and Mark Harvey. Taking its title from a Kraftwerk album, Electric Cafe applies an anachronistic approach to techno-romanticism in order to parody the uber-hipness of electronica and to infect the sleek, vacuous grooves of so-called 'cafe music'.

Chang, Clifford and Harvey share a similar irreverent approach to art-making and have teamed up to concoct a show of sensory installations that will intrigue your eyes, ears and nose. Curated by Clifford, the exhibition occupies the last two weeks before the Moving Image Centre moves from its Arch Hill home to a temporary K' Rd office. Exploiting this almost ephemeral brevity and the transitory nature of the show, there will be performance events taking place throughout.

On the second Saturday there is the electronic music night, Atomic Soup, and on the final day of the exhibition there is the performance event Rotisserie.

Atomic Soup pays homage to Kraftwerk, the German godfathers of electronica whose ninth album provides the exhibition's title. Released in 1986, Electric Cafe came out at the apex of the electro-pop era, by which stage the rest of the world had overtaken Kraftwerk's technical prowess. The culmination of their 15-year journey from futurist avant-gardism to quirky anachronistic pop, the title track extols the poetry of synthetics in an atomic age, relating technology to culture, politics and even modern diet foods. In response, Atomic Soup combines some of Auckland's more analogue oriented musicians and sound artists for a tasty brew of electro grooves. Performers include Dadsonic, Empirical, and Richard Francis vs. Andrew Clifford. Expect tape loops, synthesis, and all manner of yesteryear music-making.

Finally, to celebrate the closing of the MIC's last exhibition in its Arch Hill premises, Electric Cafe presents Rotisserie. Curated by performance and installation artist, Mark Harvey, the first Rotisserie took place in 2001 and inspired Clifford to curate Electric Cafe. Just like its previous manifestation, Rotisserie will feature a diverse collection of performance artists.

MIC is moving on March 4th 2004 to 300 K'Rd, above the Post Office and next to Artspace and The Film Archive. Our emails and postal box will stay the same but our phone number will become 3799922 and the fax will change to 3799925, so please update your records. Although we won't have a gallery space for the year, the office and editing suite will still be open and available. The Moving Image Centre will continue to produce the Homegrown NZ short films in the NZ Film Festival and Shortfuse at the Classic every second month. At the end of the year we will be moving down to the CBD as part of the Britomart development, but more on that later.

Tim Coster:
Prepared field recordings and rhythm loops are processed and im/perfectly re-arranged into songs. Additional live crackles, granular hums, clicks and tones created with gadgets and laptop. Fragile sound narratives are mixed
with approximate fragments of structure and musicality, forming shifting spatial density and mysterious geographies.

S.C.Cumuna:
Is Simon Cummings. He avoids globular clusters as much as possible while soldering budget components attained from surplustronics ...will often be found in his natural habitat attempting to complete one million projects as the uptight hobbyist/idle kiwi.?

Andrew Clifford:
Is a freelance music journalist, curator and artist. His installations and performances often hinge around everyday domestic objects, including radios, toasters and typewriters, exploring a good-humoured interest in generating
improvised electrical soundscapes from humble sources.
He will be giving a solo rendition reprised from last year's Stamford Plaza performance at the Version Festival. That means more modulating, hypnotic drones from modified household alarm clocks.

THE NEXT LAUGH: CALL FOR NEW COMEDY PROJECTS

To be held in Melbourne Friday 2 to Sunday 4 April, during the 18th Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the 2004 Biennial National Screenwriters' Conference will focus on the art of screen comedy. The Next Laugh will
showcase twelve of the best new screen comedy projects. Over two nights of the Conference, the finalists will have a maximum of ten minutes to perform their projects in whatever manner they like. THIS IS NOT A PITCHING CONTEST. The creators will be able to perform their work before a jury of film and television producers and network executives. These are all influential people who are in a position to take your project further.  

They include:
Chair: Maureen Barron (General Manager Corporate, Southern Star Group: Chair, Australian Film Commission)
Panel: Jennie Hughes (Executive Vice President, Macquarie Filmed Investments Pty Ltd)
Roger Simpson (Simpson Le Mesurier Films)
Tait Brady (General Manager, Palace Films)
Robyn Kershaw (Head of Drama and Narrative Comedy, ABC)
Victoria Treole (Senior Acquisitions Executive, Australasia, Miramax Films)

The performance can be a sketch, a scene from a film or a reading of the first ten pages of a sitcom. It can be performed live or screened. Most importantly, it must be FUNNY! The jury will provide instant feedback on every
presentation. The Conference will provide technical support, advice and assistance. This includes sound, lighting and a digital projector. If you require actors, you will need to provide them.

Can't make the Conference? Go to www.screenwriters.com.au and follow the links to The Great Wall of Comedy to upload a six-line synopsis of your project, a brief bio and your contact details. Posters will be printed on A3 and displayed around the Conference venue. Over the three days of the Conference, hundreds of people will see the poster displays who could be interested in taking your project further.
