Màtakitakihia Mai Tenei Wàhi, Watch This Space celebrates the arts of Aotearoa. Two recent works by Footnote Dance choreographers Moana Nepia and Moss Patterson will be performed in the gallery alongside paintings by leading contemporary Màori artist Shane Cotton, whose exhibition Shane Cotton Survey 1993-2003 is currently showing at City Gallery Wellington. The musical line up features tracks by well known musicians including Phil Dadson and Wellington band Trinity Roots.

These innovative performances will give school audiences and the public a unique opportunity to be part of an emerging dialogue between Màori contemporary art forms.

"Having just returned home from a 5 month national tour," Footnote Dance Director and founder Deirdre Tarrant says, "Footnote is thrilled to be performing at the City Gallery. Bringing three contemporary arts forms of Aotearoa together gives the audience an all encompassing experience of NZ music, art and movement."

First performed as part of Footnote Dance's Best Foot Forward 2003 season Moana Nepia's Inside Edge is set to music by Shane Curry, Adrian Croucher, Phil Dadson, Darryn Harkness and From Scratch. The work explores ideas of transience, migration, displacement, return and ongoing restlessness.

Also part of the Best Foot Forward 2003 programme, Moss Patterson's Pitau draws inspiration from the kowhaiwhai pattern. Performed to Trinity Roots' Little Things, the work references the pitau (koru) and the kape (crescent) - the cyclical rhythms of nature and the constant unfolding of our inner lives.

Along with the three public evening performances, a special lunchtime performance on Thursday 4 September will be offered to selected secondary schools followed by a discussion forum. Deirdre Tarrant will facilitate the forum with the dancers, choreographers and City Gallery Wellington's education co-ordinator Fiona Sullivan.
