"Echoes from previous works" paintings and drawings by Martin Whitworth
"No one note minimalist, Whitworth gives it heaps, and always his innovations seem to spring not from some art-mag borrowing but rather a desire to make his art do more, be more." Justin Paton Art NZ 1999

A major work in this exhibition "Kia ora, friendly fire" combines image and text on a captured WWII tent groundsheet. After an accidental near-death wounding by shrapnel, the artist's father witnessed a golden cross in the sky. Two smaller works on NZ army kitbags also relate to his father experiences in Italy 1943-45.
Martin associates his father's experience of terror and degradation during World War II to his own journey coping with severe depression and periods of hospitalisation and medication.
Martin Whitworth graduated from Ilam School of Fine Arts, Canterbury in 1983, this is his first Auckland exhibition.
