In conjunction with the current exhibitions, the Adam Art Gallery is pleased to present an illustrated lecture by internationally renowned Dutch artist's duo MariaMaria. MariaMaria will present their work at the Adam Art Gallery on Thursday 17 November at 6pm.MariaMaria have together been creating performance-based photographic works since 1995 and have shown their work in museums and galleries internationally. This will be the first time they have presented their work in Wellington.

MariaMaria's work has been described by art writer Jon Bywater as capturing "a tone of gentle, smart self-reflexivity about art making", and explores the natural environment using their own presence and/or absence. The artists' use their bodies as a way of personalising spaces, and discussing the construction of identity within photography.

Typically MariaMaria's highly staged, yet austere, images explore the relationship between the photographer and the model, effectively presenting a performance without an audience.

MariaMaria have exhibited their work internationally in museums and galleries in Germany, the Netherlands, the USA, Italy, Canada and the UK, as well as exhibiting numerous times in New Zealand.
