A Concert for all the Family

The MCSO presents two concerts for all the family, at the Papatoetoe Town Hall Saturday 26 June and All Saints Church Howick Sunday 27 June. These family concerts offer an exciting blend of 'entertainment' - the experience of live symphony music and lots of FUN!The programme offers an exuberant range including, musical humour in The 'Toy Symphony' and the jazzy "Tom Sawyers Saturday." The MCSO's featured New Zealand composer is Dorothy Buchanan's, "The Ghost of Denniston", a spooky musical tale with a haunting melody. The highlight is sure to be the much loved classic, "Peter and the Wolf"; with these concerts providing the opportunity for many people to hear this piece live for the first time.

Terry Spragg the co-ordinator of the MCSO and the musical director of the Howick School of Music, one of the largest music schools in the country says "One of the greatest enjoyments of playing music is being able to share the experience with the audience". She adds, "There is an energy and passion in live performance that CD's just can not capture. The orchestra is really looking forward to sharing this experience with the younger audience."

The MCSO will be conducted by one of the MCSO's favourite conductors Peter Watts. A Manukau resident, Peter, has recently returned from a musical exchange in England. Peter is one of New Zealand's leading conductors and is well known to audiences for both his conducting of orchestral and choral music.

As Musical Director of Auckland Choral Society for the last sixteen years, he has conducted much of the great repertoire for choir and orchestra. In addition, he has introduced many new works by New Zealand and overseas composers. This role has enabled him to work with New Zealand's foremost singers and orchestras. It has also enabled him to introduce exciting theatrical elements to enhance the drama of many concert performances. Peter is keen to share his love of music "I'm very keen on encouraging children to be involved in musical activities, so this concert is another step in that direction."

Both "Peter and the Wolf" and "Tom Sawyer's Saturday" will be narrated by Fiona Frankum. Fiona is the deputy principal of the Howick Children's and Youth Theatre and relishes the opportunity to work with the orchestra, adding another string to bow, when it comes to dramatic performance.

Everybody is sure to enjoy the concerts, which are guaranteed to hold both seasoned classical music fans and those just curious about symphony music, spellbound. At just $5.00 for children's tickets the concerts make a great gift for the kids.

This short classical piece was for a time thought to have been written by Haydn. However, it is now considered more likely to have been written by Leopold Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus' father.
