The Makers-in-Residence program is the first initiative of the South Project to establish networks of cultural exchange and engagement. It is generously supported by the City of Melbourne and ArtPlay.
It is intended that a program of residencies occur throughout the South Project with opportunities for Australian artists to travel overseas and work in other communities of the south. The residency program will also provide the opportunity for artists practising throughout the south to come to Australia and engage with the diverse range of cultural experiences which comprise our nation.
Background on ArtPlay
ArtPlay is an exciting new city attraction for children, families and school groups, located on the northern bank of the Yarra River in central Melbourne. Opening in February 2004, ArtPlay will cater for children up to 12 years of age and incorporates an indoor creative space housed within a converted historic red-brick railway building (constructed in 1916) and a surrounding outdoor play space.
As the name suggests, ArtPlay is about art and play and is unique in its offer of quality programmed workshops and events that aim to foster creativity and imagination within a flexible space together with an outdoor play space designed to develop and grow.
Working alongside professional artists, children are encouraged to be confident and proud of their artworks while experimenting with a range of media and forms. ArtPlay is committed to providing high quality arts experiences which enrich children's creative capacity.
The play space at ArtPlay reflects an understanding that while playing, children learn about themselves, their environment and society and to do this they require a variety of spaces and places to explore new abilities and develop new interests.
Brief
The South Project welcomes artists from South America, Africa and New Zealand to submit expressions of interest for our Makers-in-Residence Program. Artists with skills in the creative use of recycled materials are encouraged to apply. The residency provides an opportunity for two artists to live and work in Melbourne, Australia for a 4-5 week period beginning June 2004.
The nature of the residency is wide-ranging. Artists will be provided with a space to show their work at Craft Victoria for the duration of the residency. It is planned that the first two weeks of the residency be available to the artist to focus on their practice and engage in dialogue with Melbourne's local arts and crafts community.
The second component of the residency focuses on education and the sharing of skills and experience with children. Successful applicants will be expected to dedicate a number of days during the last two weeks of June to working with children at Melbourne's new ArtPlay centre located on the Yarra River in Melbourne's CBD. It is anticipated that through a program of workshops, an artwork will be produced which will remain at ArtPlay and mark the occasion of South 1. Artists with previous experience working with children and/or current links with a primary educational institution in their local towns are encouraged to apply as it is hoped that links will be formed between participating schools in Melbourne and those in the artist's home town.
The final component of the residency is the artists' participation in the South 1 gathering from 1-4 July. It is expected that the artists will participate either through the provision of a workshop which shares their skills with a broader audience or a presentation on their practice. Other suggestions for participation are also welcome.
Budget
Travel, living expenses and a fee are provided for the two successful applicants.
The South Project will organise all travel and accommodation arrangements and administer living expenses in discussion with the artists and in keeping with the project budget.
Requirements for submissions
Applicants should include the following material in their submission: A succinct outline of creative practice and intentions for the period of the residency extending to no more than two A4 pages
Up to three pages of supporting visual material, or no more than 10 slides or photographs of current and relevant works, and/or one CD/video. All support material must be labelled with the artist's name.
A current resume of no more than three pages
All written material should be in black ink or printed typeface, white A4 paper, printed on one side of each page only, no staples, bound materials or folders, no faxed applications

Selection
The selection process for the Makers-in-Residence Program will be undertaken by a committee comprising South Project staff and representatives from the City of Melbourne.
Successful applications will be selected on the basis of their artistic quality and integrity.
Planned over a six-year period, this project is unique not only in its longevity but also in its focus on lateral forms of exchange.
The South Project seeks to define itself from the many festivals occurring on the world circuit by establishing itself as an open event with room and occasion for the many voices of the south to be heard.
Geographically 'the south' refers to those countries located in the southern hemisphere such as Samoa, Tonga, French Polynesia, the southern countries of South America and Africa, Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, New Zealand and Antarctica.
The overall focus of the project is on the visual expression of culture, including visual arts, crafts, design and architecture. Craft has an important role to play as a language of technique and materials that provides a convertible currency for exchange between traditional and modern worlds. Other art forms, such as music, writing and performance are included as creative stimuli.
Beginning with a forum in July 2004 and continuing through workshops and residencies over the following years, the South Project aims to facilitate dialogue and exchange amongst cultural producers whose practices address interests of the south.
The project seeks to engage with communities through networks that extend to cities, villages and townships. Exchanges of skills through workshops and residencies will be facilitated. Involvement with schools will begin with a Makers-in-Residence Program at ArtPlay in June 2004. The culmination of these encounters will be a festival of events and ideas taking place in 2008.
The South Project starts with South 1 (The gathering), a forum to be held in Melbourne from 1-4 July 2004 at the Sidney Myer Asia Centre. South 1 seeks to bring together a number of cultural producers and practitioners from around the world who will represent a variety of disciplines, cultures and geographical regions. Through a program of talks and discussion groups, South 1 participants will present their personal and professional perspectives of the south, explore the notion of the south as a physical place and conceptual state, discuss commonalities of the south such as the environment and migration, and most importantly talk about the South Project, its aims and what such an event needs to deliver in this day and age.
Connections and conversation begun in South 1 will continue through the facilitation of a number of roaming workshops and exchanges which will take place throughout the south. Referred to as South 2 (The journey), this next step in the South Project will run over a number of years and will enable a series of practitioners to move throughout the regions of the south engaging in cultural exchange and creative development. Materials, techniques and histories will be exchanged and collaborations between cultures commenced. This second stage will consolidate the relationships initiated by the South Project and will provide physical outcomes to the discussions begun in South 1.
The South Project will conclude in 2008 with South 3 (The arrival). Here the outcomes of South 1 and 2 will culminate in a festival celebrating the cultures of the south. Exhibitions, performance and programs will be presented to the audiences of the south providing a range of perspectives as to what the south is and where it is headed. A publication documenting the development of the South Project will also be released to mark the conclusion of the monolithic event and to celebrate its achievements. While South 3 will be the official end of the South Project, it is anticipated that the relationships and networks facilitated by South 1, 2 and 3 will continue into future collaborations and projects. In addition, a website will be launched in December 2003 which will form an ongoing archive of the South Project. The South Project website will act as a resource containing a database of activities of communities of the South. This will provide a point of focus for the project and a means of reaching a broad base of participation.

Ownership
The artwork will owned by, and remain with, ArtPlay and mark the occasion of South 1.
Copyright
Copyright and intellectual property of the design and the work will be vested in the artist. The artist will grant to the South Project an irrevocable licence (without payment) to reproduce images of the work for promotional purposes. The South Project and The City of Melbourne shall acknowledge the artist where possible as the Designer of the work.
Promotion
The South Project will document the Makers-in-Residence Program. It will also promote the Program, including presence on the South Project web site and other promotional materials and activity.
Other Considerations
Applicants should be able to converse in English and be in the position to meet and negotiate any visa requirements for entry to Australia. The South Project will provide written confirmation to the successful applicants regarding their participation in this project.
