"Performing magic has taken me around the world and is such a cool job. I get to amaze and scare people for a living," says comedian magician Jarred Fell.
Jarred pops in for a quick QnA before his free magic show and workshop this weekend, on Saturday August 9, as part of the Pick n Mix events at Aotea Centre, Auckland.
Jarred has been a professional comedian magician for more than seven years and performed in Las Vegas, L.A, New York, Singapore, Malaysia and all through NZ. He also has appeared on numerous TV channels and sell out shows in seven Comedy Festivals.
* * *
Are you born magical?
Haha no.. I trained myself in magic. Reading books and learning from watching other magicians.
What's the coolest thing about being a magician?
The Ladies... Jokes! Performing Magic has taken me around the world and is such a cool job. I get to amaze and scare people for a living!
What do you do if you run out of magic on stage?
I never have... But if I do in the future I'll most likely walk off stage and cry :P
You've forged an international career as a comedic magician. Apart from old-fashioned hard work, do you have any tips for performers who wish to travel with their craft?
Yes. Be good at what you do. I have traveled and seen some very bad acts and wondered how they are doing this for a living. There is a big craving for magic now with every TV channel having a magic program on it. Master your skill and have friends and other acts watch you and get feedback on your craft.
What's the hardest thing you've ever done?
I once escaped from a mail bag in rope and was tied to a motor bike, I had two minutes to escape before the bike took off. I actually fainted inside the bag and woke up just in time to escape. That was scary.
Are kids the most terrifying audience?
Yeah because kids are the hardest critics. If they see something dodgy they will yell it out haha. I love it though!
What advice would you give to someone who wanted to be a magician?
Pick up a book on magic and start practicing, perform for your friends. Find a local magic club and get started!
What are you planning to cover in your workshop for Pick n Mix?
I will be covering the art of misdirection. Using simple everyday items making them disappear and teaching these techniques.
What shows are you working on next?
So many - I'm currently developing a close-up magic show for adults which will be advertised soon. If anyone is interested in seeing this show or having a private magic lesson feel free to follow me on my Facebook page or contact me via my website.
