Open Form Improvisational Theatre Workshops

This is for actors, dancers, musicians, writers; performance artists who wish to explore, develop, create and present their own theatre.It involves solo, duet and group work. Participants come from a range of different backgrounds and skill bases. There is a wide range of instruction offered covering most of the performing arts using improvisation as the primary source of discovery, development and expression.

The essence of these workshops is to play and explore an extraordinary fun way to express and develop your self as a performer. This improvised approach fosters an experimental and physical way of learning. The performer discovers what they like doing, what they like seeing and takes responsibility for developing there own style of theatrical self-expression.

· Develop physical skills and awareness, non-verbal and verbal articulation

· Take risks and challenge yourself in a safe environment

What happens in these workshops?

The first section starts with the warm up to connect with our selves (physical, emotional, imaginatively) then to the space and the other performers. The play comes next using a method of improvised scores. Performers focus on developing physical skills and awareness as well as creative play. By exploring movement patterns, textures, sounds, words or characters with different partners, sometimes initiating sometimes responding your own style is enhanced and expanded.
The second section starts with a cup of tea and launches into the performance. The performer chooses to solo or duet and the performance lasts from around 7-10 mins. This performance is generally totally improvised. That means that when the performer steps onto the stage neither performer nor audience knows what will happen - but something will. The performer's first actions are like the painter's first brush strokes on a fresh canvas, either the first movement, sound or word will be the beginning of the performance and as the performer listens and responds to there own actions, the story unfolds.
This encourages performers to present their own unique style and content. Feedback form performer and audience follow. The style of the feedback is designed to enhance and recognise your performance identity, open up creativity and to increase theatrical intelligence.

Outhouse is an end of term performance evening when all the groups perform on the same night and invited an audience. Held at St Columba Church, 92 Surrey Cres, Grey Lynn. (See dates above.) Performers arrive 6pm for workshop and warm up. Performance starts 7:30 and finishes at 9pm.
Inhouse This is performers night only. Held on a Friday night (midterm) at St Columba Church, 92 Surrey Cres, Grey Lynn. Performers arrive 6pm for workshop and warm up Performance starts 7:30 and finishes at 9pm.

Cost:

NZ$250 waged / NZ$220 unwaged for a 10 week series
Maximum of 12 participants per workshop
