A self-financed short film shot in Auckland in a single day is coming second in a leading American competition. Some Of My Best Friends are American, made by Max Currie and Kelly Mitchell, is deliberately timed to coincide with US elections, in which voters in eight states will decide on gay marriage law reform.

cf.huffingtonpost.comThe film has the potential to win the Huffington Post's Contagious Film Festival that runs throughout November. The short spoof is a fake news item about a bizarre law change in New Zealand. If the law is passed, it would ban Americans from marrying each other on New Zealand soil.

It's the first NZ film to be entered in the competition.

The film's writer/director Max Currie says, "American heterosexuals are the new sexual deviants. They're morally disgusting; they take too many mood-enhancing drugs, they're obsessed with sex, and there is no way God is going to let them into heaven - in fact, he's already sent down a plague of obesity as punishment. That's pretty much what my film says."

"It's an American film competition about American politics, so the last thing they expect is a New Zealand perspective, especially one full of slogans like 'God hates yanks'.

"America is bombing civilians and torturing prisoners while at the same time saying same-sex couples are too morally reprehensible for marriage. If God had to pick sides - do you think he side with the ones doing the killing, or the ones wanting to get married?.

Things are going to get awkward if we win, but we're definitely in with a chance, so we might have to consider it."

The film was launched on the website on November 1, and the competition finishes at the end of the month
