New Zealand composer John Psathas has a brand new work premiered at a major international music event in London, the Rhythm Sticks Festival. The work, a solo piece for marimba, junk percussion and tape, is entitled One Study One Summary and will be performed by the renowned Portuguese percussionist Pedro Carneiro.

Rhythm Sticks has grown into Europe's most prestigious drumming and percussion festival. For nine exhilarating days, London's South Bank reverberates to percussion music from all over the world. It is a major career highlight for Psathas to have a work premiered at the festival and it demonstrates the high regard percussionists around the world have for his music.

"As with all John's work, this is music made up of a feeling of urgency, it has to exist!" says Carneiro. "It is a physical experience. One Study One Summary is serious, strong, honest art music, made with sounds from the world evolving around us: busy cities, rush hour, throbbing/deafening sounds but also humanity, love and a desire to share his deep love of music."

One Study One Summary is the second collaboration between Carneiro and Psathas. The 2002 New Zealand International Festival of the Arts included Psyzygysm, a specially commissioned concerto for mallet percussion and chamber ensemble, which featured the young Portuguese virtuoso percussionist as star soloist. On 19 July Carneiro will give Psyzygysm its Northern Hemisphere premiere in Lisbon with the Portuguese group Orchestrutopica under the baton of Cesàrio Costa.

John Psathas' music was heard at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, and these two latest events will continue to further his reputation as a composer of outstanding merit.
