Is New Zealand the design wilderness of the South?

We have bought into the myth that natural is best.
The announcement that the New Zealand Institute of Architects had given its top award for contemporary architecture to the Peregrine Estate Winery in Central Otago came at a bad time. The national news media had reserved the very small amount of space it apportions to contemporary architecture for stories about singer Shania Twain's attempts to find a house design that might gain the approval of the Queenstown Lakes District Council. Yet both the winery and the pop star's house serve to cast light on some rather strange attitudes to the regulation of new buildings in the rural environment.
