Image: The adventures of Massey Fergusson - Flux Animation TV SeriesThe information session is organised by The Economic Development Group of Auckland City Council at the Flux Animation studios, 5 Waima St, Newton, on March 12 at 4.30-6.30pm.

Hamburg is the epicentre of German media including film, TV, advertising and music production. In addition to a large number of small and medium-sized studios, two major animation studios are based in the Hanseatic city.

Auckland City Council signed a strategic alliance partnership with Hamburg in April 2007. The award is being promoted in New Zealand by the Goethe-Institut in Wellington.

The fifth awards are scheduled to take place on 26 June 2008, focusing on the "Style and Story" aspect of animated cartoons, i.e. a well-told story filmed in a unique or completely novel style.

Participants

The contest is open to graduates and students of colleges or schools (film academies, technical colleges and universities) in Germany as well as in the guest country New Zealand. Entrants from the animation schools of New Zealand will be judged separately with one winner receiving the country award. All contributions submitted for the country award automatically also qualify for the other award divisions.

In past years, the country award went to Denmark, Turkey and United Arab Emirates; animation schools from these three countries are welcome to participate in the upcoming contest as well. Films of various animation techniques, such as 2D, 3D, puppet animation, etc. are admitted. Entries close Friday 30 May 2008.

Prizes

The three best animated cartoons shall be awarded as follows:

1st Prize: Hamburg Animation Award 2008 ( ‚¬ 5,000)
2nd Prize: Hamburg Animation Award 2008 ( ‚¬ 3,000)
3rd Prize: Hamburg Animation Award 2008 ( ‚¬ 2,000)

Two additional awards shall be presented:

Hamburg Animation Award 2008-audience award ( ‚¬ 888)
Hamburg Animation Award 2008-country award New Zealand ( ‚¬ 2,000)
A special country award will be presented to up-and-coming animated cartoon artists from New Zealand. All contributions submitted for the country award automatically qualify for the other award divisions.

To get some inspiration, dip into the colourful and exciting world of animated films by visiting the exhibition Animated Films From Germany. The show gives a many facetted artistic overview of German animation film, ranging from classic animation techniques to computer technology.
