NINE LIVES: THE CHARTWELL EXHIBITION 2003
IN AUDIO Lovely Midget
Under the moniker of Lovely Midget, Rachel Shearer creates ghostly music from sounds that have been digitally stripped and scrubbed down to their raw underlying textures. These are painstakingly reconstructed into new audio environments that are rich with detail, like an enlarged and enhanced photograph. Shearer also works as an audio technician and post-production sound designer. Her second album North Head is about to be released on the American label Family Vineyard.

In Audio is a new forum for intriguing, unusual and experimental performances from musicians and audio artists. It promises to provide an eclectic array of sonic artistry to mystify, stimulate, or soothe the ears of gallery patrons. Expect to encounter established performers exploring new approaches, or just generally letting their hair down, as well as exciting new artists. In Audio takes place approximately once a month on Sunday afternoons and is curated by Andrew Clifford, a freelance music journalist and artist.

NINE LIVES: THE CHARTWELL EXHIBITION 2003 13 September - 23 November
Nine Lives focuses on nine leading New Zealand artists, tracking across many of the significant developments in contemporary New Zealand art in last 20 years. They include L Budd et al, Julian Dashper, Jacqueline Fraser, Bill Hammond, Michael Parekowhai, Peter Peryer, John Reynolds and Michael Stevenson currently exhibiting at the Venice Biennale. The ninth artist is the late Giovanni Intra. Intra was well known as an art critic but a mini-retrospective of his work, included in Nine Lives, demonstrates his cutting-edge work as an artist. A special exhibition-within-the-exhibition will be the highlight of this show.
