Iconic NZ protest photography at Auckland Museum

Since the early 1970s, Gil Hanly has photographed many of this country's major social movements and public events. To coincide with the 20th anniversary of NZ's landmark nuclear-free legislation, Auckland Museum has worked alongside Hanly to select some of her iconic images of the anti-nuclear protest activities of the 1980s - a movement that eventually saw the enactment of New Zealand's nuclear-free legislation and the revision of the ANZUS treaty.NZ's nuclear-free movement of the 1970s and '80s focused on nuclear testing in the Pacific, visits by nuclear warships to New Zealand ports and the establishment of a nuclear-free nation. Nuclear Free: Protest Photography by Gil Hanly covers locally-based peace groups involved in this movement and illustrates how this major social phenomenon grew in scale and momentum.
