The iconic peace mural on the reservoir at the corner of Ponsonby and Karangahape Road was collectively painted by Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms in 1985 as a protest towards the global nuclear threat and especially French Nuclear testing. Due to disrepair the original mural was removed in December and portions are to be auctioned. A new mural, made up of digital photographs of the original mural and some new works were launched at Artstation in Ponsonby Road last night.

The 20 year old colour mural had become irreparably damaged..

A much loved and respected feature of the city landscape, it was collectively painted by members of Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms, a lobby group formed in 1985. It is not lost! A replica of the first eight panels, digitally printed from the original photographs, will be installed by 31 January and original pieces sold at auction. Check out Trade Me for the auction.
