Hotspot, an exhibition of works by Kate Walker, opens at Nelson's Suter Gallery on 10 August. Along with paintings by Walker, the exhibition features collaborative video works by the artist with local writer Cliff Fell and Texan artist Jennifer Beth Guerin.

Image: Elsewhere video still, Kate Walker and Jennifer Beth Guerin, 2007Walker's large-scale paintings use a language of symbols, mundane objects and references to place. These combine to form narratives that chronicle contemporary life.

The paintings in this exhibition focus on provincial New Zealand culture, overlaid with references to the United States and its looming presence across the globe.

This interplay between New Zealand and the Southwest United States is a principal concern in Walker's work, as it is in Fell's recent poetry. Walker lived in Arizona from 2003-05; Fell travelled in the southwest in 2004.

Elsewhere, the video work by Jennifer Guerin and Kate Walker, traces themes of dislocation, loss and cross-cultural exchange.

"Each artist is exploring identity using their own particular art form and what is interesting is the dialogue between the different approaches of the exhibitions," says Acting Director Julie Catchpole.
