Showcasing & celebrating Maaori music
National Radio's Waiata will be broadcasting on Thursday nights at 9.06pm, showcasing a huge range of material from the wide world of Maaori music and musicians.
I am producing and presenting the show, which will feature 6-8 artists every week in a 24-minute time-slot. At this stage it looks as if the show could be a long-term prospect - at least for a year, which is a laudible commitment on the part of Radio New Zealand.
The show is called, simply, 'Waiata', and will focus on showcasing the music of Maaori artists from all genres, persuasions and eras. The show particularly celebrates music in Te Reo Maaori, but not exclusively - there'll be music in English, instrumental music, classics from showbands and kapa haka roopu...In other words, my main aim is to create a stimulating and interesting show every week, provide a bit of context for the music and expose these fantastic waiata to a wider audience. Who I'm sure, e hoa ma, will love it as much as I love it.
'Waiata's first broadcast date is Thursday 2nd October, 9.06pm.
The first show will feature:
Mahinarangi Tocker
Elena (violinist)
Te Rangihau Gilbert
Whirimako Black
Morgan Clarke with Benny's Five (from 1955)
Aotearoa
If you have any material you would like me to listen to for the show, please feel free to send it to me. Radio New Zealand have a huge archive of Maaori music but I'm very very keen to hear anything other than what they may have. Kia kaha e te hunga puoro ki te tuku mai i o taonga kia rere atu ai ki te ao whanui! The address to send CDs to is:
